Before the supreme court overturned PASPA in 2018, Nevada was the only state where sports betting was legalized under state jurisdiction.
Today, more and more states are beginning to get in on sports betting action. As of 2021, 19 states and Washington D.C. have legalized sports betting in some kind of capacity, whether it be in-person, on mobile, or both.
Six states passed bills to legalize sports betting in 2020 and 2021, including:

- Louisiana
- South Dakota
- Virginia
- North Dakota
- Maryland
When it comes to legalizing sports betting, every state’s legislature has attempted to pass a bill except for Wisconsin, Idaho, and Utah.
What Is the Size of the US Sports Betting Market?
As states release revenue reports over time, we have begun to get a better understanding of just how big the sports betting market really is. Gambling analysts have estimated that the sports betting market is worth somewhere between $200-400 billion.
As sports betting becomes legalized in more and more states, especially for mobile sports betting, this number will increase significantly.
How Much of Sports Betting Revenue Can Be Accounted For?
When it comes to sports betting revenue by state, only specific revenue is tracked and tabulated.
Offshore sportsbooks that do not fall under US jurisdiction have no requirement, or desire, to share their revenue reports with the public. Similarly, tribal casinos are also not required to share their revenue reports.

A bill to legalize sports betting in Alabama was introduced in March 2020. Currently, the legalization of sports betting is under consideration by the Alabama legislature.
Alaska Sports Betting Revenue
There is currently no data available for this state.
The Alaska Lottery Corporation Act was introduced in early 2020 in an attempt to legalize forms of gambling, which would include sports betting.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Alaska state legislature ended early, causing the bill to expire in May 2020.
Arizona Sports Betting Revenue

Arizona passed a bill in April 2021 that will allow state-wide mobile sports betting and in-stadium sportsbooks to operate. However, the bill is awaiting further action/approval before sports betting will be officially launched in the state.

However, the future of sports betting in Hawaii is looking hopeful. SB 595 is a bill that proposes the creations of a sports gambling task force. This group would be responsible for examining the economic feasibility of legalizing sports bets in Hawaii during the 2022 and 2023 legislative sessions.

Due to the deep anti-gambling sentiment in Kentucky, a bill proposed to legalize sports betting in 2020 was shot down.
Politicians are planning to propose another bill in 2021 but will need a 60% vote to pass the bill per legislative requirements in odd years.

Sports betting is expected to launch in 2021 or 2022, with 56 of the 65 parishes in support of legalized sports betting, including all of the parishes surrounding Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette.

In 2020, Maine’s governor vetoed a bill that would legalize online sports betting, as they felt the proposal lacked protection for problem gambling.
While the veto was challenged, the override did not receive enough votes. Another bill aiming to legalize sports betting is expected to be introduced in 2021.
Maryland

During the 2020 election, the state of Maryland legalized sports betting. In 2021, 60 online options and 30 retail options were approved for accepting sports bets.
However, sports betting in Maryland is not officially launched, as regulators still need to establish rules for establishments and mobile betting.
