Seattle Kraken Preview
The Kraken began their season with a challenging 4-1 loss to the reigning champion Las Vegas Golden Knights. This defeat was particularly disappointing since they managed to score just one goal, which does not look like the fourth best team in the Pacific Division a year ago.
Last season, the Kraken were able to score 3.52 goals per game, earning them the fourth position in the league for that category. Among those goals, they averaged 30.5 shots per game which ranked them 20th in the league. In their matchup against the Golden Knights, they actually shot 33 times compared to their 28, so accuracy is a big factor.
Defensively they allowed teams to contribute 3.07 goals per game, which put them about the middle of the league in that regard. Opposing teams were taking 27.0 shots per game, which was the second-best average at the end of the season last year. If they can keep other teams from getting shot attempts, they are likely able to keep within reach.
The Kraken typically won over a majority of their matchups when they were expected to win as favorites. This is another grand opportunity, assuming they can have better accuracy when shooting.
Nashville Predators Preview
The Predators suffered a defeat in their road-opener, which was a 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have some work to do if they want to have a good start, especially since they finished fifth in the Central Division and missed the playoffs last year.
They need to have a spark on offense this season, as they averaged 2.73 goals per game last year and were among the worst teams in the league in that category. They also took less shots than most of the league, with 29.4 per game and ranking 24th. Fortunately for them, they exceeded both of those previous averages in their last matchup against the Lightning.
Their defense was solid last year, coming in at 2.88 goals per game and ranking 12th. They also averaged 24th in the league for their opponents shots per game, with the same amount that they shot.
The Predators had plenty of situations where they were expected to lose, so the underdog status was something they relished in when they succeeded. They were good at it too, as they won 47 percent of those games as underdogs.
