New Orleans Pelicans Preview
The Pelicans are coming off of a 42-40 season last year, where they barely missed the playoffs with a play-in position and finished ninth in the Western Conference. Their season ended after a 113-108 defeat in the play-in tournament against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
They did not have a strong road record last season, as they went 15-26. This could be a challenge for them this season, but they must prioritize one game at a time. However, changes in the lineup for both teams in this game might be the biggest difference.
They are in a good position to do better this year and make a strong playoff push, assuming they stay healthy. Last year, they averaged 114.4 points per game, which ranked 15th in the league. Their defense was actually not bad, as they allowed 112.5 points per game that ranked ninth in the league.
Plenty of strong performances from Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson led the way for the Pelicans success. Assuming Williamson can stay healthy, they have a bright outlook this year. In total, they have five guys that averaged 14 points or better every game, but need Williamson to be a force.
Memphis Grizzlies Preview
The Grizzlies finished second in the Western Conference last year with a 51-31 record. They were defeated in six games in the opening round of the playoffs against the seventh-seed Los Angeles Lakers.
They were a monster at home last year, having a 35-6 record. This was one of the best records in the league and arguably the most difficult place to play in the NBA.
Their scoring margins were solid, as they averaged 116.9 points per game and ranked ninth in the league. On defense, they allowed teams to average 113.0 points per game, which ranked 11th. This is slightly more breathing room than what the Pelicans averaged last year.
Despite their success in reaching the playoffs and any feats from last year, they have a big issue to start this year. Arguably their best player, Ja Morant (26.2 PPG), is serving a 25-game suspension following his actions off the court last year.
The Grizzlies will need to rely on the other handful of scorers that average over 10 points a game. These include Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. to help carry the load.
