Once considered bottom-feeders of their respective divisions, the Cincinnati Reds (42-38) will take on the Baltimore Orioles (48-30) in the rubber match of a three-game series. In Game 1 of the series, the Orioles ran up the score in the early innings en route to a 10-3 victory. The Reds, meanwhile, bounced back on Tuesday, with a 3-1 decisive win to snap their 3-game losing streak. In that contest, the Reds relied on rookie Andrew Abbott, who improved to 4-0 on the season, to keep the Orioles’ hot bats at bay. Abbott did just that, limiting the O’s to just 2 hits and 1 earned run, while notching 8 K’s.
Now, the Reds will look to claim the series win to stay atop the NL Central and extend their 0.5 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. The O’s, on the other hand, sit in second-place in the highly-competitive AL East, four games back of the ML-leading Rays.
For the final contest, the Reds will send the struggling Luke Weaver (1-2, 6.86 ERA) to the mound to oppose fellow right-hander Kyle Gibson (8-5, 4.30 ERA).
As of this publication, the total sits at 9.5, which is not surprising given the high ERAs of both pitchers. With the Orioles’ bats silenced yesterday, they should be able to feast off Weaver and the Reds will have to generate runs of their own to stay in the game. Expect Cincy slugger Elly De La Cruz to finally come alive in this match. The rookie sensation has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats and is due for a big night.
