Tennessee Football Introduction

Football is the most common bet placed by American sports bettors and the state of Tennessee is a perfect example of this. The state has a rich history of football, as the Tennessee Volunteers football team for example was founded in 1891.

Looking at Tennessee’s historical football players, there are plenty that come to mind. Whether they were born here or attended college, the best players in Tennessee football include:

  • Reggie White
  • Peyton Manning
  • Jason Witten
  • Doug Atkins

The Tennessee Titans are the heart of football here, besides the Tennessee Volunteers, as the only professional football team (NFL) in the state. There are plenty of collegiate football programs (NCAAF) in the state, as shown below for a few, by popularity:

  • Tennessee Volunteers
  • Memphis Tigers
  • Vanderbilt Commodores

Different Types of Football Bets

Football offers an array of bet types that are suitable for all bettors regardless of their expertise. If you are new to Tennessee football betting, these bet types can seem a little daunting at first.

The best advice is to look over each football bet type closely to enrich your betting experience. There is nothing wrong with doing research and getting as much information as you can about a player or team.

Moneyline Bets

The simplest football bet to make is the moneyline, or a straight up pick. You are choosing the team that you think will win, and odds are assigned to each team based on their chances.

The favorites have lower odds and payouts, while the underdogs have higher odds and payouts if they manage to win. For example, check out these numbers:

Team A: -250

Team B: +215

Looking at Team A, they have the minus (-) sign in front of the 250. This means they are considered the favorite to win. For every $250 you wager on them, you will earn $100 plus your original stake if they win.

For Team B, they are considered the underdog since they have a plus (+) sign in front of the 215. For every $100 you wager on them, you will earn $215 plus your original stake if they happen to win.

Point Spreads Bets

Point spreads are commonly used in football and is another popular bet type for the sport. It involves a (+) or (-) handicap for each team, which is referred to as the “spread.”

In order to win a point spread bet, you will need to predict line movement in consideration with the final score. For instance, if Team A is favored over Team B with a -7.5 spread, they have to win by at least eight points for you to cover the spread and win the bet.

However, if Team B is the underdog here, they likely have a spread that is +7.5. This means they have to lose by less than seven points or win the game outright for the bet to pay out.

This form of betting is popular in college football since it is common for weaker teams to play powerhouse schools. It is easier to handicap a weaker football school than giving them a ridiculously high underdog moneyline and attempting to take that bet (since it is highly unlikely that these teams will win, but they might keep it close).

Totals Bets

Totals, or over/under, is a bet type that is attempting to make a wager on how many points are going to be scored in the game by both teams combined. For example, you might see an O/U number such as 46.5.

This means you can bet the over on that amount, with 47 or more points winning the bet. If you choose under that amount, it will need to be 46 points or less to win.

Futures Bets

Futures bets are wagers made on events that are usually a long time away, as the name implies. They are typically in the moneyline format for a given scenario, so it is crucial to grasp how to interpret them correctly before making your predictions.

For example, here are some NFL futures you might see:

  • MVP of league
  • Super Bowl winner
  • Winner of AFC/NFC division

Prop Bets

Prop bets are a combination of various “fun” bets that you can make on the game. They do not really relate to the final score, but rather events that could take place.

Player props have to deal with a given player’s ability to run the ball, tackle, or even throw. There are also team and game props. Here are some you might see in an NFL game:

  • Will there be a safety recorded in this game?
  • Will a Quarterback throw over 300 yards?
  • What color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach?

Parlay Bets

You can greatly boost your bets with the addition of parlays, as your betting potential increases while your bankroll is stretched further. Simply combine at least two bet types of your choice on a single betting slip that you think will come true. If these bets pan out, your reward will be slightly more than if you did them individually.

With parlays though, if any of your chosen bets do not win, the entire wager is lost. However, if you get all selections right, it can lead to much higher payouts the more that you add onto the betting slip, making it an exciting and potentially lucrative betting strategy.
